Volunteers are a key component in HCHC’s work to support and empower residents. Volunteers bring diverse skills, ideas, energy, and life experience, which enrich the social services programs and expand the opportunities available to residents.

Each year, HCHC’s Volunteer Coordinator distributes questionnaires to all HCHC residents asking them to list their greatest needs. She then researches community organizations that might fill those needs and provides links for residents.

One of the primary activities of the volunteer program is HCHC’s food pantry. Twelve regular volunteers pick up, sort into bags and distribute the food to HCHC residents and the community at large every week.

In addition, volunteers provide activities for seniors, programs for youth and workshops for all residents. Last year, a group of HCHC youth undertook training with materials from Enterprise Community Partners and presented Green and Healthy Living workshops at 13 HCHC buildings.

One of the highlights of the year is HCHC’s annual Thanksgiving Carnival and turkey give-away, fully sponsored by Muse Lifestyle Group.  Food, fun and activities are all free to residents, and every household takes home a turkey with fixin’s.

Volunteers are welcome to come and help out on the Thanksgiving Carnival. Volunteers may also be interested in preparing fully stocked backpacks for HCHC’s annual Back-to-School effort or wrapping holiday gifts for residents at the end of the year.

If you are interested in any of these activities, or if you have a skill to share or would like to provide an activity or workshop for residents, please contact Consuelo Lopez at 323-454-6204 or email clopez@hollywoodhousing.org.
