From
the beginning, HCHC's goal has been more than simply developing
much-needed affordable housing in Hollywood and surrounding neighborhoods.
Our aim has always been to provide a safe and attractive living
environment for families and individuals, incorporating smart,
innovative planning and design to maximize access to transportation,
services, retail businesses and other amenities.
Today,
HCHC's team of human service professionals plan and implement,
in partnership with other local service providers, a broad range
of progarms and services designed to assist our residents in joining
the socio-economic mainstream, to grow as individuals and become
productive members of the community. Due to its high rate of success
in utilizing services to assist with maintaining housing among
the formerly homeless and other special-needs clients, HCHCs'
Resident Service program was chosen by the Los Angeles Housing
Authority to participate in a national research project used by
the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to create
a best-practices manual.
Resident
Services : Resident
Services Coordinators (RSCs) meet with residents regularly to
assess their psycho-social needs and to assist residents in developing
and working toward their goals. RSC's make referrals to supportive
services needed by the resident, which may include health services,
substance abuse recovery programs and legal assistance. HCHC's
Community Developer is responsible for outreach,
scheduling educational workshops and speakers, and working with
the existing network of social service organizations to provide
additional resources to HCHC’s residents.
Therapy
Services:
HCHC's residents, particularly those living with HIV/AIDS
or who have experienced homelessness, are facing life crises which
can create depression, isolation and disorientation. By attending
therapeutic support groups, led by qualified and credentialed
therapists, a resident can gain the emotional support of others
who are experiencing similar crises.
Children's
and After-School Enrichment Program:
HCHC provides two after-school enrichment programs serving children
ages 5-12 years of age, as well as parenting skills instruction,
including problem-solving and alternatives to physical punishment.
Parenting skill instruction makes a significant impact on family
life in our housing facilities. The academic enrichment received
by students is an important source of support for their educational
success.
ESL Classes: An
estimated 50% of HCHCs' residents are immigrants whose first language
is one other than English. HCHC provides English as a Second Language
instruction and literacy classes to some 200 residents ages 14
through adult providing them the opportunity to obtain the English
proficiency necessary to participate fully in the community, succeed
in educational and career goals, and attain economic independence.
In a collaborative effort with the L.A.Unified School District,
HCHC also offers a Distance Learning ESL program at six of our
housing sites.
Food
Bank and Life Care Program: This
program provides eligible residents with nonperishable food, hygiene
items, school supplies, and bus and taxi vouchers for doctors,
school or social service appointments.
